Four In-Person, Single-Day Botanical Art Workshops

with Linda Ann Vorobik, PhD Botanist and Botanical Artist

at SKEA (http://skea.org/; 808-328-9392). Scroll down for registration links

I have much experience in guiding participants to further their own goals, while at the same time introducing new tips and techniques. My goal in teaching is to help participants select challenges appropriate for their skill level, so that they can complete as much work as possible within the workshop. I encourage each individual to participate in the learning process: we all have so much to share and contribute.

workshop October 21, 22, 23, and 24; Thursday through Sunday. Hawaii I have missed you! After consulting with my host in Hawaii and the director of SKEA.org, where I offer these workshops, and having been fully vaccinated, we all decided it was safe for me to travel and offer workshops after a 2 year absence from the Big Island. I have changed my proposed two weekend workshop format to four individual days, 11 am - 4 pm, as follows. Sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis, limit 8 participants, pay on link below, or contact me at vorobik@gmail.com to sign up.

What to Bring: For supplies bring what you have, but at minimum pencil, pencil sharpening (if not using a mechanical pencil), white plastic eraser, metric ruler, magnifier (glass, hand lens, or your phone!), any sketch pad or sketching paper (9 by 12 inches or smaller), a pallete or plate to use as a palette, two containers for water, brushes and paints if you have them. I will supplement the rest. Please scroll down for more about supplies.

Saturday, Oct. 23: Botanical Watercolor: Drawing and painting orchids. Orchids are among the most complicated of flowers, and can be challenging but also very satisfying to draw and paint.

The workshop begins with an illustrated talk along with posters about the amazing structure of orchids; we will look at samples to understand what parts are what.

Those who took the first two workshops will be able to dive into their drawings and paintings, and I will work individually to get others started.

Several new watercolor techniques will be demonstrated, including painting water droplets (always a hit!).

These workshops are small, and the rhythm is my presenting material, doing technique demonstrations, your working individually, and my helping each of you to understand how to approach drawing and painting your subject, and understanding what is a realistic and therefore satisfying goal for the day. There is also plenty of time for "request" demonstrations.

Botanical Illustration: Drawing and Painting Orchids, Saturday, 10/23/21 at SKEA, limit 8 participants

Supplies: See the PDF for a list of supplies used in my Botanical Art Workshops, or a three page list of references with comments. Before taking a workshop, it would be very helpful to read my blog entry on supplies.

If you do need to or wish to purchase supplies, I am very impressed with Akamai Art; their selection of materials is excellent, and the ladies are very helpful.
