Deer Fern (Blechnum spicant)

Blechnaceae

Deer Fern is a common inhabitant of moist coniferous forests from the coast of northern California to Alaska, and frequently occurs in the Olympic Mountains, and on the west slopes of the Cascades. It is one of the few species of western ferns with dimorphic fronds (= leaves of two forms). Like Parsley Fern (Cryptogramma species), deer fern has a basal rosette of vegetative fronds, and several fertile or spore-bearing fronds that arise from the tip of the growing stem at the center of the rosette. Deer fern is an excellent addition to any western garden where water is not limited, or where a shady moist spot can be found.
